It's hard to believe that every city in the United States with a population over 100,000 has done this at least once, except for three.  But Buffalo is the only one in the lower 48.

A lot of people in the Buffalo area are aware of this stat.  It's been around literally for as long as they've been recording it, but something changed this week that made Buffalo, NY, stand out from the pack.

Buffalo has never hit 100 degrees or more

People in Buffalo, NY, have never seen a 100-degree recorded day for as long as they've been tracking temperatures in the United States. To make that stand out even more, it's the only city in the lower 48 states to have never done it. They're in a pack of three cities in the US, when you consider that Anchorage, Alaska, and Honolulu, Hawaii have never done it either.

That stat changed this week

That group of cities was at four before this past week. It was Buffalo, Anchorage, Honolulu, and Tampa Bay, Florida, but Tampa has been removed after it hit the 100-degree mark on Monday.

Why hasn't Buffalo gotten that warm?

One of the best theories to support why Buffalo has never gotten to 100 degrees is its proximity to Lake Erie. For the most part, Buffalo benefits from a Southeasterly breeze that blows off of the lake, which tends to keep Buffalo on the cooler side. It's also what is to blame for some of the massive snowstorms that make the news every year.
