How many times have you been asked to go fishing with a friend and couldn't because you didn't have your license? This weekend, you don't have to worry about that.

Is there anything better than a day out on a creekbed or a lake with a line in the water? There's a famous phrase that states, "A bad day of fishing is still better than a good day at work." That's because even if you don't catch a single thing all day, at least you were able to relax while watching your bobber go up and down.

New York State is having a free fishing day

In New York, you need a license to fish. It's only a couple of bucks, and you don't have to take any tests or anything to get it, but it's just an extra step when you want to get out on the water. But this weekend, you'll be able to fish without having to worry about having a license. It's part of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's "Free Fishing Day."

It's only one day, and it happens on Saturday, September 27th.

“Free fishing days are the perfect time for newcomers to learn to freshwater fish or for experienced anglers to bring others outdoors to enjoy the many abundant waterways across New York.” - DEC Commissioner Amanda Lefton

This year it coincides with another special day

The free fishing day this year will coincide with another special day, "National Hunting and Fishing Day." It's a day set aside to help "encourage people to experience, understand, and appreciate traditional outdoor sports and recreation and abundant natural resources, while also recognizing hunters and anglers for their leadership in fish and wildlife conservation."

Keep in mind that you will still have to abide by all of the same rules about the specific type of bait you can use, where you can fish, and more.

There will be one more free fishing day coming up before the end of the year on Veterans' Day (November 11) in New York, too.
