Is It Too Early For Halloween Decorations In Western New York?
Is there a date when it becomes socially acceptable to start putting up decorations for Halloween?
Is there a date when it's ok to put up Halloween decorations?
While starting the list of fall chores on Labor Day weekend, I noticed our giant pumpkin, which we always put up for Halloween, sitting in the attic of the barn. For a second, I thought it might be a good idea to just put it up so we wouldn't have to worry about doing it when it's a little colder outside.
I immediately asked my wife if she thought it was a good idea, and we both went back and forth about whether it was too early.
The very next day as I was headed into work, I saw something hanging from a tree in town that looked like toilet paper. I thought, for sure, someone had a prank pulled on them, and the remnants were still there. But as I got closer, I realized it wasn't toilet paper at all. It was a handful of ghosts that someone had put up.
It's my house, I'll put them up when I want to
There will be plenty of people out there who will argue that it's your house and you can decorate it how and when you want. They're the same people who will complain when their neighbor leaves their Christmas lights up 24/7/365.
Some people will put up Christmas decorations as soon as they can, but most people will agree that they shouldn't be lit up until after Thanksgiving is over.
Sure, it's fine to put up your Halloween decorations whenever you want. It's your house. But is there a date when most people agree that it's ok to start with them? Is that date after Labor Day? Is it after October 1st? What do YOU think?
