Needless to say people all over North America were thrilled when the Fédération internationale de football association, better known as FIFA, announced that the 23rd FIFA World Cup would be played in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

A total of 104 games are set to be played in stadiums across 13 different North American cities from June 11th to July 19, 2026:

  • Vancouver and Toronto in Canada,
  • Guadalajara, Monterrey, and Mexico City in Mexico, and
  • Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Atlanta, Boston, Miami, Philadelphia, and New York/New Jersey.

With the vast variety of sports stadiums in North America, there will be all sorts of different playing conditions that teams will need to contend with. Be it indoors or outdoors, with climate control or not, and of course, heat and humidity because the weather is quiet in Monterrey, Mexico, compared to Toronto, Canada.

Now What Is The Dumb Thing That FIFA Is Pointing Out To New Yorkers

Now, according to OutKick, FIFA does not allow any non-FIFA-related advertising or branding during a match. Many stadiums in North America have commercial branding deals that name the stadiums after other corporate brands. To comply with FIFA rules, these stadiums must be renamed temporarily during the World Cup.

For example, AT&T Stadium in Dallas, which is home to the Cowboys, will be renamed Dallas Stadium; BMO Field in Toronto, home of FC Toronto, will be renamed Toronto Stadium; Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, home of the San Francisco 49ers, will be renamed San Francisco Bay Area Stadium, and so on... You get the point.

This, of course, brings us to New Jersey York and MetLife Stadium, which is the home of the New Jersey York Jets and Giants. With its naming convention, FIFA points out the ridiculous thing we real New York football fans must deal with daily. MetLife Stadium is being renamed New York/New Jersey Stadium.

Let that sink in for a moment: New York/New Jersey Stadium is home to the New Jersey Jets and Giants.

While this story is primarily about soccer, let's make sure we all agree on one thing; there is only 1 New York football team: The Buffalo Bills.

Hey Jets And Giants, Give New York Its Name Back

The truth will set you free and it's simply a fact that the New York Jets and the New York Giants are not New York. They're New Jersey, which isn't something to be ashamed of. They should drop New York and claim their true home proudly.

The Giants ditched New York in the 1970s and began playing their games at Giants Stadium in the Hackensack Meadowlands section of East Rutherford, New Jersey. The Giants headquarters have also been located in East Rutherford since 1976.

The New York Jersey Jets weren't that far behind when they, too, dumped New York and Shea's Stadium in the early 80s. The Jets moved their headquarters to Florham Park, New Jersey, and subsequently decided to be stadium roommates with the Giants in the Meadowlands for the last 40 years.

While no one says not to be a fan of the Jets and Giants, it's time for them to accept that they are no longer New Yorkers.

So go back to Jersey and give us our name back.
