It looks like the trend of gas prices falling will soon be over in New York State.

Starting in a couple of weeks, gas producers will have to switch over to the summer blend of gas, which is more expensive to make, and that will drive the cost of gas up across the state.

WHAT IS SUMMER BLEND GAS?

The summer blend of gas is used across the country between May and September. The gas is mixed to withstand warmer temperatures and not evaporate as fast as the winter blend. The process to make the gas is more involved, which leads to higher prices.

HOW MUCH MORE PER GALLON DOES SUMMER BLEND GAS COST?

On average, the price for a gallon of summer blend gas is about 10-15 cents more than the gas used during the cooler winter months.

According to AAA, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas in New York State is around $3.10. That is down two cents from last month and down around 40 cents from last year.

If these prices hold, you can expect to start paying around $3.25 per gallon in the month of May.

There is some good news: while gas producers need to make the switch to the summer blend on May 1st, gas stations don't have to make the switch until June 1st. That means they can sell whatever "winter" blend they have left in May before making the switch to the "summer" blend.

That could lead to prices staying lower in the first part of May.
