As they prepare to bring in cats and dogs from Florida who lost their homes due to two recent terrible hurricanes, the SPCA Serving Erie County is offering free adoptions of dogs and cats six months and older.

But you need to act fast. Today, October 15, is the last day for this special offer.

The fees are being waived in order to allow the shelter on Harlem Road in West Seneca to make space for animals that will certainly be making their way north as shelters in Florida and other states hit by hurricanes Helene and Milton dig out from the storm’s destruction.

“Animal shelters affected by the storm and filled to capacity anticipate an overwhelming need to house a high number of homeless animals and are asking the SPCA Serving Erie County and other receiving shelters throughout the nation to accept the transport of their existing shelter pets,” the SPCA said.

President and CEO Cait Daly adds, “Here at the SPCA, with grit and determination, we find creative ways to help people and animals, and we know our community and our donors support these efforts. Buffalonians always find a way! So many generous, supportive folks have reached out, asking how they can help those in the hurricane’s path, and we have an answer: Adopt!”

The organization is also preparing to send staff down to help animal shelters and rescue groups in Florida as they recover.

The waived adoption fee for cats and dogs older than six months ends today, October 15, and the shelter is open until 6 p.m. You can review available animals here.
