Why Western New York May Have A Skunk Problem
Have you ever been driving down the 190 when you get hit with an overwhelmingly bad smell coming through your air vents?
You may think, at first, that it’s marijuana…but that may be actual skunk.
Someone jumped on the Buffalo subReddit just to verify the claim, and it looks like a majority of Western New York agrees.
I’ve seen more skunks out recently, too, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing.
You may have noticed….there have been way less rats roaming the streets of Western New York recently, and that could be due to skunks!
Skunks tend to eat rodents, like mice and rats, as well as insects. They can actually help you take care of your yard by eliminating constant pests and rodents that would otherwise be destructive.
Not only can you smell the skunks, people are catching a glimpse of them on their security cameras.
One Western New Yorker let their dog out in their backyard, and unfortunately a skunk sprayed it, so they had to take care of the smell. And the easiest way to remove the skunk smell from clothing and fabrics is by washing them with a regular laundry detergent mixed with 1/2 cup baking soda in hot water. You have to air dry the clothes after that, because a machine dryer could keep the smell baked into the fabric if it’s not entirely gone by the first wash.
If you are trying to lure a skunk away, legend has it you can use coffee grounds! Coffee grounds have a bitter scent, which deters the skunks from approaching, but keep in mind that they do help with the rat issue!
