While the spring-like weather in Buffalo and Western New York has been a nice change for us, considering what a bad winter we've had this year, the cold weather season isn't gone for good yet. Looking at the current weather forecasts that are coming from local meteorologists, along with the National Weather Service, a blast of cold weather is on the way to Western New York, and you should make sure you're prepared to handle it, even though it'll only be for a short time.

While we don't expect any lake-effect snow to fall, temperatures will be below freezing to hit the region overnight from Monday, March 17, 2025, to Tuesday, March 18, 2025.

While this may create an issue for some folks, the main concern is the persistent homelessness problem in the Western New York region.

As rents have increased month-to-month, it's becoming harder for people to find and keep safe and sustainable housing. This issue has caused more Western New Yorkers to have to live on the streets.

Code Blue Issued For Tonight In Western New York

Because these cold temps are on the way to blast the region, the city of Buffalo has issued a Code Blue for the area.

According to WGRZ-TV, city officials are going to open two overnight warming shelters and an additional daytime shelter to help people who do not have a safe place to stay warm.

The following locations will be open starting tonight:

  • Restoration Society - 586 Genesee St, Buffalo, 14204
  • Dulski Center - 129 Lewis St. Buffalo, 14206

The WNY Coalition for the Homeless gives quite a bit of information about what a Code Blue is and when it's issued for Erie County and the City of Buffalo. The regional cold weather emergency safety plan provides outreach, transportation, shelter, and a warm meal to individuals in our community who are unhoused on evenings when temperatures or wind chill falls to 32 degrees or below.
