A foundation founded in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks has proposed converting a long vacant Cheektowaga nursing home into an apartment complex that will cater to homeless veterans.

In a series of transactions recorded Oct. 3 in the Erie County Clerk’s office, the Staten Island-based Stephen Silver Tunnel to Towers Foundation paid a combined $1.423 for parcels at 3600 Harlem Road and 3653 Harlem Road.

The deal includes a vacant 39,496-square-foot two-story nursing home at 3600 Harlem Road that sold for $1.2 million and an adjoining parcel at 3653 Harlem Road for $223,000.

The 3600 Harlem Road building was constructed in 1961.

Plans call for the buildings to be demolished and remediated and replaced with a three-story building with 91 apartments. All of the apartments will target homeless veterans, which is part of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation core principles.

Branded as Veteran’s Village, the $20 million project is slated to start later this fall.
