What Is Women's History Month?

Celebrated in Australia, United Kingdom, and United States, Women's History Month was created to celebrate and highlight the contributions women have made to society, worldwide, in America, and right here in the Empire State.

Women's History Month in America can track its roots all the way to 1911 with International Woman's Day. The celebration of women gained formal recognize in 1981 when Congress requested that President Reagan proclaim the week starting March 7, 1982 as Women’s History Week. It was 6 years in 1987 later that Women's History Month gained formal recognition.

Several government agencies, including The Library of Congress, the National Archives and Records Administration, and the Smithsonian Institution, have joined together to maintain a historical record of the role women have played in America. The New York State Museum also holds a similar record of women who have done the same in the Empire State, and you can find all sorts of resources and exhibitions to help you learn more about women in New York.
