Violent Gun Crimes Are The Worst In These 11 New York Counties

While New York has some of the strictest gun laws in the United States, there is still a high incidence of gun violence in the state. Some areas, like Buffalo and New York City, have more violent crimes committed with firearms than others. Violent crimes, as defined by New York, are murder and non-negligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. The rankings below list the number of violent crimes and also those committed with a gun from the most recently released report from 2021.

In New York State, there were 12,762 violent crimes committed with a firearm (that were reported). The rate is 64.3 per 100,000 people.

Here's a look at the 11 counties and their biggest cities that have it the worst (based on their violent crime with a firearm rate).

11. Queens (Queens County) - 60.5 Rate (1,412 Crimes) in 2021

10. Schenectady (Schenectady County) - 64.6 Rate (103 Crimes) in 2021

9. Niagara Falls (Niagara County) - 67.1 Rate (143 Crimes) in 2021

8. Syracuse (Onondaga County) - 77.6 Rate (365 Crimes) in 2021

7. Troy (Rensselaer County) - 78.3 Rate (127 Crimes) in 2021

6. Manhattan (New York County) - 85.9 Rate (1,356 Crimes) in 2021

5. Brooklyn (Kings County) - 89.5 Rate (2,365 Crimes) in 2021

4. Albany (Albany County) - 89.6 Rate (279 Crimes) in 2021

3. Buffalo (Erie County) - 123.1 Rate (1,158 Crimes) in 2021

2. Rochester (Monroe County) - 134.9 Rate (1,025 Crimes) in 2021

1. Bronx (Bronx County) - 179.8 Rate (2,565 Crimes) in 2021

Outside of New York City, Rochester, which is the third-largest city in New York State has the most violent crimes committed with a firearm.  Buffalo, the second-largest city in the state, has the third most violent crimes committed with a gun.
