Birthday's come and go, sometimes they're a big deal and sometimes they're not. However, it's not often that something or someone turns 193, but that exact thing has happened today.

While the region has been home to people for hundreds of years, it wasn't until the mid-1700's when the first European settlers began to arrive in the region that we now call Western New York. The region was sparsely populated by non-native Americans until the late 1700's when the first permanent residents, like Joe Hodge and others, began to call the area around the Buffalo Creek home.

It was then around 40 years later that this small village became one of the largest and fastest growing cities in America.

New York State's Second Largest City Celebrating Big Birthday

Incorporated as a City on April 20, 1832, just 20 years after being burned in the War of 1812, and less than 10 years from the opening of the Erie Canal, Buffalo officially began it's history as a city.

From it's incorporation as a city, Buffalo grew exponentially year-after-year, which helped to solidify the regions position as the both the Queen City of the Great Lakes and the Queen City of New York.

While the last 193 years have had it's rough spots, Buffalo and the people who live all over Western New York are proud of our little piece of the world, all while we proudly proclaim this to be one of the best places to live in America.

PLAN NOW: Cherry Blossoms Are Popping in Buffalo!

The Buffalo Cherry Blossom Festival is at the end of April. This magnificent celebration of spring takes place in the city's historic Delaware Park. Here, in a six acre Japanese Garden, thousands of visitors can witness the joy of a cherry blossom festival in Upstate New York without traveling to some of the bigger like festivals, such as in Washington, DC. This gallery has the history of the festival and, in the final post, links for all the details when visiting it. US News and World Report has named this Buffalo festival as one of the Top Ten cherry blossom festivals in the United States.
