Even though Buffalo is New York State's second-largest city, often the Queen City sits in the shadow of the Big Apple. For many years, the people who live in the Empire State, but outside of New York City, have struggled to have a powerful enough say in the way that the state is run to make sure that everyone gets their fair share.

That was until one woman from Buffalo's eastside was elected to the New York State Assembly, and over the last two decades, Crystal Peoples-Stokes earned her way to become one of the most powerful people in New York State government.

Over a political career that started in the early 1990s, People-Stokes has represented Buffalo for more than 30 years, and as the current Majority Leader of the New York State Assembly, has worked to ensure that Buffalo gets its due from New York State.

However, it seems that long tenure serving the people of Buffalo is coming to an end, according to multiple sources, including the Buffalo News, WIVB-TV, and WKBW-TV.

When Peoples-Stokes current term ends at the end of this year, it's being reported that she will retire from the Assembly and is not seeking reelection.

Peoples-Stokes, who turns 75 in December 2026, has spent a lifetime advocating for Buffalo on the county and state level and, with multiple degrees from Buffalo State University, seems like she's ready to retire after decades serving Western New York.

While speaking to the Buffalo News, State Senator Jeremy Zellner, who is also the Erie County Democratic Committee Chairman, said that they will seek resumes and details about anyone who wishes to seek the party's endorsement.

We are going to ask anyone who is interested in filling that declination to send us a resume and the committee to fill vacancies will interview people this weekend and then they will make that determination and do the paperwork and file it by Tuesday

If Peoples-Stokes does retire from the Assembly, that will be just the latest change to the political leadership in Western New York, as we saw quite a bit of change at the start of 2026.

There is a press conference scheduled for Wednesday, April 8, 2026, where Peoples-Stokes is scheduled to talk to the public.
