Rookie Radar: Monday Night Football
There were quite a few firsts on Monday Night Football, especially for the rookies. Here’s how the rookies did in the 47-10 blowout against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Keon Coleman
The rookie receiver was involved in 91.1% of the offensive snaps in Week 2, yet he did not play a single snap in the first quarter and only played a total of 20 snaps.
But on his first drive of the game and only target of the game, Coleman caught a 24-yard pass and took it to the end zone for his first NFL touchdown. Josh Allen faked a handoff to James Cook before passing to Coleman deep to take a 20-3 lead.
Head coach Sean McDermott said his being benched in the first quarter of the game was due to a time-related issue that did not occur on Monday.
Ray Davis
The rookie running back also recorded his first NFL touchdown in front of the home crowd. His touchdown came in the fourth quarter in the form of a 3-yard rush to the right with only 4:04 left to play.
A Jaguars fumble recovered by the Bills helped set up Davis for his trip to the endzone, as they started with the ball on Jacksonville’s 21-yard line.
Ty Johnson had three runs to the middle, right and then left, respectively, to put the Bills at the 3-yard line for Davis’ rush.
He finished the game with 22 yards on seven carries to go with his TD. Davis also had one catch for one yard on one target. He played in 12 snaps.
Javon Solomon
Solomon’s strip sack in the fourth quarter was another nail in the coffin. After the rookie’s first NFL sack and forced fumble, the Bills scooped up the ball on the 21-yard line and then marched into the endzone to extend their already daunting advantage over the Jaguars.
Without Solomon’s efforts, Davis doesn’t get his first touchdown. He was in on 20% of the defensive snaps and 56% of special teams’ snaps and earned a grade of 93.3 on Pro Football Focus.
Casey Toohill
Toohill not only had a sack but also managed a fumble recovery that set up the offense for their sixth touchdown of the night.
He sacked Trevor Lawrence in the fourth quarter on the start of a drive, which ended in a turnover on downs and 0 yards.
After Solomon’s strip sack, Toohill was there to take hold of the ball. The defensive end played 41% of defensive snaps and two tackles in addition to the sack, which resulted in a loss of yards. Toohill also played six snaps on special teams.
Joe Andreessen
“Buffalo Joe” suited up for his first game of the season on Monday night with Terrel Bernard out of the lineup.
Andreessen played 20% of the defensive snaps and finished the game with two tackles, one of which was solo. He played 60% of the special teams snaps.
