As fall arrives in New York State, we begin to look forward to all of the great things that autumn has to offer us.

A majority of the tax bills that are due to your local school district in New York State come due on October 1st.

Considering that New York residents routinely pay among the highest taxes in the nation, this is just another day that we don't look forward to. Have you ever wondered what areas within Erie County have the highest school tax bills when compared to the other places in the county?

Here are the 4 towns in Erie County, New York that have the highest school taxes.

Elma, New York

With four separate school districts falling within its borders, Elma by far has the highest school tax rates when compared to other areas of Erie County. According to the data, the rates are no lower than $379 per $1,000 of assessed value (East Aurora Union Free School District). The highest rate is $450 per $1,000 of assessed value for the part of Elma that is served by the Orchard Park Central School District.

West Seneca, New York

The section of West Seneca that is served by the Sloan Union Free School District has the honor of having the second highest school tax rate, with a rate of just under $64 per $1,000 of assessed value. So, a homeowner with a house that is taxed at a value of $100,000 can expect a tax bill of around $6,000 for the year.

Aurora, New York

Those who live in the Orchard Park Central School District part of the town of Aurora have the distinction of having the 3rd highest school tax rates in Erie County at just over $56 per $1,000 of assessed value.

Sharing the school district with the Village of Kenmore, the Town of Tonawanda counts itself as having some of the highest taxes in Erie County with a tax rate of nearly $55 per $1,000 of assessed value, which means someone who owns a home that is taxed at $100,000 can look forward to a tax bill hovering around $5,500 per school year.
