Wednesday’s Top Trending Stories In Western New York

Here is a look at what's happening around Western New York today.

1 – It is a much colder start this morning than we had yesterday. We are looking at a high today around 42, but all that will change as we head into the weekend. We do have lake effect snow on the way for parts of Western New York starting on Friday. There is a Winter Storm Watch for Wyoming, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, and Southern Erie counties from Friday at 7 am until Monday morning. Current weather models are calling for several feet of snow for some of the higher elevations with most of the 716 getting a couple of inches of snow this weekend.

2 – If you are traveling today or tomorrow, the weather should be pretty decent. We could see some scattered rain tonight and on and off for Thanksgiving morning. The afternoon should be dry tomorrow, you might just have to deal with some wet road conditions. That lake-effect snow will move in Thursday night and into Friday and then continue through the weekend.

3 – One lucky person in Buffalo is $50,000. The New York State Lottery announced that there was one “Big Money” winning ticket sold at the Delta Sonic on Main Street in Buffalo from Monday night’s Powerball drawing. That ticket matched four out of five numbers and also had the Powerball number and won the 3^rd place prize of $50,000.

4– The Buffalo Sabres are back at home tonight after sweeping their 3 game west coast road trip over the past weekend. Head Coach Lindy Ruff said the team learned a lot during that West Coast trip. Tage Thompson who missed all three of those games due to an injury said he will be back on the ice for tonight’s game against the Wild.

5 - If you are heading out to the Bills game on Sunday, you might want to make sure you have plenty of winter gear as we could see lake effect snow impact the game. While most people think the Bills would have an advantage over San Fransico in cold snowy games, that might not be true. Since 2008, the 49ers have had the best winning percentage of any NFL team in cold-weather games. So we will have to wait and see if the weather will benefit the Bills on Sunday.
