Buffalo To Lose Two Institutions in First Week of 2025
Sunday morning’s sunshine came with an immediate dark cloud: Mulligan’s Brick Bar has burned.
The fire started very early Sunday morning and moved quickly. Social media posts and early reporting indicated the building to be a total loss, as smoky daylight appeared in the upstairs windows of the charred building.
An Allentown staple, Brick Bar was located right next to the vacant lot formerly occupied by the beloved Pink, which burned to the ground last June.
The fire at Brick Bar was called in shortly after 4 a.m. Sunday morning, infamously the time Buffalo bars close. As of Sunday morning, there were no reports of injuries or confirmation on what caused the fire.
According to a social media post from Acting Mayor Chris Scanlon, the fire was under control by 8:45 a.m. Sunday, lasting nearly five hours.
The structure was built in 1897 and has welcomed patrons as a bar since 1934.
This was the second gut punch to local institutions, after word started spreading Friday night and apparently was confirmed Saturday that downtown music staple Mohawk Place will be closing.
First reported by 1120Press on Instagram, an email was sent with the message, “You may have heard rumors, but it looks like Mohawk Place will be closing in the near future.” Saturday morning, the venue stated in an Instagram post that “It looks like we might not be around much longer…” People who attended a New Year’s Eve show say the bar appeared to be winding down, only accepting cash and having very limited drinks on hand.
This announcement comes a few weeks after a woman who was left partially paralyzed from a Mohawk Place show last summer is suing the man who fell on her.
Bird Piché, 24, is suing the band Trophy Eyes, whose singer violated the venue’s no stage diving rule and fell on her, breaking her neck. She’s also suing the venue and the promoter, After Dark Entertainment.
Mohawk Place still has shows scheduled for another few weeks, as of Sunday morning, so if this is a venue you’ve loved, now is the time to go.
We’re losing our spaces in Buffalo. Don’t take for granted the bars, music venues, and coffee shops you love; you don’t know whether they’ll be around tomorrow.
